Old mobile phone recycling, charities and makes nation

Pollution Control Department in cooperation with the public and private sectors initiated "Old mobile phone recycling, charities and makes nation project". They will receive old mobile phones from the general public for recycling and then donate the revenues to foundations and charities.

On 9 February 2017, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, General Surasak Kanchanarat, presided over the opening ceremony on the old mobile phone recycling project and the signing two Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) documents at the meeting room 1 Queen Sirikit National Convention Center. First Memorandum was signed between the Pollution Control Department by Director General Jatuporn Buruspat and the partnership agencies including the Office of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission, the Department of Environmental Quality Promotion and mobile phone operators: Advanced Info Service PLC (AIS), Total Access Communication Public Company Limited (Dtac), True Corporation (true), Samsung Company (Thailand), Sony Corporation, and MBK Public Company Limited. While Second Memorandum was signed between the Pollution Control Department and waste disposal operators including Better World Green Public Company Limited, Waste Management Ltd., Akkhie Prakarn Public Company Limited, Umicore Marketing Services (Thailand) Ltd., and Matsuda Sangyo Trading Thailand Co, Ltd. The Project will seek to take in used and obsolete mobile phones from the public for recycling and any revenue generated will be donated to charitable organizations.

Minister of Natural Resources and Environment said briefly on waste management policy as follows:
1. Old mobile phones management should be implemented by following the principle of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), and controlled with properly waste disposal management.
2. The management including providing drop off points, collecting, transferring, disposing and recycling of old mobile phones should be done with cooperation of all stakeholders in order to be worth of using renewable resources.

The old mobile phone recycling project has been started. Those who would like to donate their old or obsolete mobile phones could drop them at the service points with the symbol "old mobile phone recycling".
