Songkran festival 2017: Water quality observation

Pollution Control Department monitored surface water quality during Songkran festival. It was found that overall surface water source was good and acceptable to splashing and swims as usual. However, people should avoid water entering directly into body because it may effect to health. Coastal water quality of tourist attractions along the Andaman Sea, Phangnga, Phuket, Krabi, Trang and Satun province, is also good.

Mr. Jatuporn Buruspat, Director General of Pollution Control Department, said that Pollution Control Department incorporated with Regional Environmental Office monitored surface water quality throughout the country in February 2017. It was found that surface water source is good and acceptable to swim as usual. However, people should avoid water entering directly in to body because it may effect to health. Sources of good water quality are of 1) Upper Lang Suan, 2) Upper Phetchaburi, 3) Upper Tapi, 4) Ing, 5) Sai Buri, 6) Upper Lamtakong, 7) Oon, 8) Welu, 9) Khwae Yai and 10) Nong Han, respectively.

Pollution Control Department recommended the preliminary principle observation of water quality in rivers and canals to public in case of using public water during Songkran festival. To observe public water quality, natural color of water is needed. It should be light brown or translucent green without any contamination or abnormal odor (oil, stinky, food smell and unwanted smell) or strange substances from human activities (greasy, food waste, waste or rotten waste). Additionally, public water source should not be situated near by discharge pipe from factories, communities or agricultural area. However, public water possibly consists of invisible contaminations which can?t be seen by naked eye, it must therefore be measured in the laboratory.

Regarding to marine water quality, Pollution Control Department collected water samples from tourist attractions along coastal area during February to March 2017. The result revealed that most of marine water quality at the Andaman coast in Phangnga, Phuket, Krabi, Trang and Satun province was good. Marine water quality at Tonsai Beach (South Phi Phi Island), Krabi province was excellent. While marine water quality at Yong Ling Beach (Trang province), Central Nai Harn Beach (Phuket province), Khuk Khak Beach (Phang-nga province), Kamala Beach (Phuket province) and Pakbara Beach (Satun province) were good.

In addition, marine water quality at the Gulf of Thailand in Surat Thani, Prachuap Khiri Khan and Phetchaburi province was ranged between fair to excellent. At Lamai Beach (Samui Island) Surat Thani province, marine water quality was excellent. Marine water quality at Hua Hin Beach (Prachuap Khiri Khan province) and Chao Samran Beach (Phetchaburi province) were good. While marine water quality at Puktien Beach and Middle Cha-Am Beach (Phetchaburi province) were fair.

During Songkran festival this year, people should be careful on water splashing, help together to save water, keep clean in tourist attractions, drop waste into bin and do not drop it into water sources and sea. People should also avoid water entering directly into eyes, ears, nose and mouth and should take a bath after water splashing. If there was abnormality of body such as irritant to skin or rash, people should stop splashing and clean body. Sources of water should be checked and reported to related government organization.

In this connection, Pollution Control Department continuously monitored surface and marine water sources including risk areas in order to protect health impact and environmental quality in tourist attractions.
